OOTD: apple-picking in plaid (but not the lumberjack kind)

Apple-picking is my all-time favorite fall activity. Every fall, I get together with a group of friends to do it at least once. This year, we went twice–first to a new place we’d never tried before, and then to our regular apple orchard.

The new orchard was smaller and overall less exciting than our regular spot–which has a petting zoo, a friendly kitty, hay rides, delicious food, and great people-watching–but it was still a lot of fun. (And yes, this was about two months ago. I meant to get the pictures up earlier, but oh well! As the weather gets colder, it’s nice to look back on the early fall days when I could go out in a sleeveless dress.)

Dress: Domino Dollhouse, belt: ASOS Curve, crown: Crown & Glory, studded wristband: PacSun, tattoo wristband: eBay, cameo necklace and earrings: Lithia’s Creations, other necklace: I Am Joolienn, sneakers: Brooks via Zappos, folder: Tulipop

The folder is from Iceland, where I discovered Tulipop and fell in love. It’s a brand of adorable characters who live in a forest, and it’s ubiquitous among the quirky gift shops of Reykjavik. I bought this folder, a few cards to put on my wall, and a small magnet–and was seriously tempted by the Mr. Tree lamp, but couldn’t bring myself to spend that much money. I happened to be carrying some paperwork in the folder on the day we went apple-picking, so I figured why not include it in a picture?

OOTD: Cruella DeVille-ish

Inspired by the many awesome black-and-white outfits I’ve seen around the fatshion-o-sphere, I decided to try my hand at my own.

Tunic: Aster via Zulily, bellydance top worn underneath tunic: from a clothing swap, skirt: Deb, leggings: Re/Dress, shoes: Naot, necklace: clothing swap, earrings: not sure, headband: Brykalski

I really wish this tunic were better quality. I’m so into the asymmetric hem and the contrasting prints; I’d love for it to be a long-term wardrobe staple, but I’ve only worn it a few times and it’s already pilling and fading. Uggh, pilling is the bane of my existence. And those random fuzzy spots that show up for no discernible reason, which happened to the back of these leggings.

OOTD: girly punk with a Parisian twist

Some days I just feel really, really pink.

plus size leopard and hot pink outfit

Dress: Reborn Collection via Zulily, cardigan: SimplyBe, belt: ASOS Curve, necklace: Betsey Johnson via eBay, earrings: Forever 21, leggings: Domino Dollhouse, shoes: Naot, coat: Nicolette Mason for ModCloth, hat: Brykalski, tote bag: gift from a friend

I love, love, love this Paris-themed Betsey Johnson necklace. When I got it, Steve said it looked like a necklace that had eaten a bunch of other necklaces, and it’s so true. I love all the tiny details, from the little Eiffel Tower to the tiny dress form, spool of thread, and shears.

And the hat is from actual Paris! It’s one of the three gorgeous headpieces I got at a tiny hat shop that one of my friends recommended. You can see one here, and I’ll be posting an outfit with the third one soon. (Also, yes, I promise I will post about my trip to Paris and Iceland soon! I’ve got a bunch of posts mostly written, and at this point I just have to deal with picking out and uploading pictures–which is no small feat, since I took nearly 2,000 of them.) I normally like to wear the hat a little further forward, but it had shifted back a bit and unfortunately I didn’t look in a mirror before taking these pictures. Oh well! Continue reading

When sweatpants become a form of protest: “There’s a reason that women dressing casually threatens the status quo — it’s subversive and the ultimate sign of not caring.” Fat women often suffer additional judgment when we dress casually, since an outfit that may be perceived as casually stylish on a thin women is seen as sloppy on a fat woman.

Halloween OOTD, part 2: the daytime look

What I love about Halloween: it’s the one day of the year when I go to work dressed like this.

Dress: Ashley Nell Tipton, cardigan: Torrid via eBay, leggings: Domino Dollhouse, shoes: L.L. Bean, devil horns: Crown & Glory, necklace: Tarina Tarantino at Amazon, ring: Torrid, bracelet: eBay, earrings: a shop in Paris

Leave it to Crown & Glory to put hot pink sparkly devil horns in their October Glitterati box! 😀

The picture of my ring came out a bit blurry, but I had to include it because I’m so in love with this ring. My earrings were also skulls, but I didn’t get a good picture of them.

Halloween OOTD: the Queen of Darkness

plus size goth witchy halloween costume

I’ve been feeling particularly goth-y lately, so I decided to dress up as a witch for Halloween. While looking for my velvet burnout shawl, I found a mesh poncho that worked really well as a veil–which turned the costume into more of a goth bride or a queen of darkness.

Dress: Torrid, skirt: ASOS, shawl: ??, veil/poncho: clothing swap, boots: Hot Topic literally 14 years ago, necklace: Boohoo, flower crown: Crown & Glory, socks: Domino Dollhouse

Dressing up for Halloween reminds me that I feel so much more myself when I’m wearing what most people would consider a costume. I loved walking around in this get-up; the only problem was that the shawl kept slipping off my shoulders, and pulling it back on without messing up the veil was tricky. Continue reading
