OOTD: Floral for Pi Day!

Every year on or near March 14th, Steve and I hold a Pi Day party. After we got engaged in February, I started thinking about having a party to celebrate, and it seemed only natural to combine our engagement party with our annual celebration of pie.

I’m so glad we did. The party was incredibly wonderful: so many friends from so many parts of our lives came together and showered us with love in the form of delicious, delicious baked goods (as well as a few savory pies like quiche and pizza). If I could bottle up that feeling, I would.

Outfit August, day 12: pretty pastels

This dress is really short–even on someone as short-legged as I am–hence the skirt underneath.  I really like how they go together, and it felt vaguely superpower-ish to have hidden unicorns under my dress.

Meghan Trainor’s “All That Bass”: body-positive anthem?

I’ve been seeing a lot of hype for this song as the “body-positive anthem of the summer,” and my feelings about it are pretty mixed. First off, the song is fun and catchy, and I love the pastel outfits and set design. So many flower crowns! So much tulle! It’s incredibly aesthetically appealing.

I think it’s great that there’s a fat guy dancing, even doing a split near the end of the video–hell yes for fat athleticism!–but I wish there was even one genuinely fat woman featured. The singer and her backup dancers are only slightly larger than the media ideal, maybe in-betweenies at most. It’s just one of many, many “body-positive” projects that focus on smaller fat or not-even-fat women, and I’m so over that.

I’m also so over the song’s heteronormative focus on appealing to men, with lines like, “Yeah, my momma she told me don’t worry about your size/She says, boys they like a little more booty to hold at night.” Really? In 2014, we’re still supposed to base our self-esteem on what men (supposedly) like?  And the reference to “skinny bitches,” sigh.

Personally, my body-positive anthem will always be GabiFresh’s #everyBODYisflawless.

August wishlist: birthday edition

In honor of my birthday, which is coming up tomorrow–can you believe I’m going to be 28?!–I’ve put together a compilation of things I’d love to get if a magical fairy fatmother showed up waving her wand at my front door.

If I actually had a fairy fatmother, the first thing I’d ask for would be a stable, satisfying job with good pay and benefits–but pretty things are much more fun to fantasize about.

 I SO want these Nirvana and Courtney Love dresses from Vera’s Eye Candy, which I found through Betties N Brimstone–who had a dress custom-made in her size. Nirvana and Hole were a big part of my adolescent years, and I’d love to be able to wear that history on my body.

Vera’s Eye Candy also carries various items in the same fabrics as Domino Dollhouse – for example, this galaxy top and dress, and this rainbow digital print dress.
