Fatshion February, day 10, part 2: glitter hearts!

Today’s second outfit was inspired by Valentine’s Day coming up. I’m still not sure what I’m going to wear for V-Day, but this heart headband is a definite contender.

Fatshion February, day 10, part 1

I’m finally starting to feel better, but still stuck at home due to the snow, so I had some fun playing dress-up with my new Crown & Glory pieces. Next time I wear this marabou crown, I’ll have to find a darker background–it doesn’t show up that well against the white wall.

Indie spotlight: Crown & Glory’s Glitterati

Still no Fatshion February outfits, as I am still sick (booo). Steve had a cold that involved a terrible weeklong sore throat, and just as he started getting better, I caught it. So I’ve got a painful sore throat, and Boston is still getting hammered by record-breaking amounts of snow that far exceed our infrastructure’s ability to deal. It’s been a long couple of weeks, to say the least.

On a happier note, here are some pictures of my latest Glitterati box! The Glitterati is a monthly subscription box run by Sophie of Crown and Glory. Each box costs £20 (~$30), and contains over £50 (~$76) worth of items. It’s a great way to feed my hair accessory addiction while also supporting an independent craft-maker–like a CSA for sparkly things.

Sunday links, 2/8/15

Blog note: I haven’t been doing Fatshion February posts for the past few days because I’ve been sick, booo. I’m hoping to be better, and back to daily outfit pictures, within the next day or two.

Why I’m not excited about Ashley Graham’s ad in Sports Illustrated

ashley graham swimsuits for all ad

The internet’s been all abuzz with the news that Sports Illustrated‘s 2015 swimsuit issue will include an ad featuring plus size model Ashley Graham.

Yay?

As much as I care about fat representation in media, and as much as I think Ashley Graham is gorgeous and probably a lovely person, I can’t bring myself to care. This doesn’t feel like a step forward to me, for three reasons.

First, although Graham is a plus size model, she’s smaller than most women who actually wear plus sizes. In fact, as a tall size 14/16, she is likely thinner than the average American woman. Magazines have been including token hourglass-shaped, barely-plus-sized models for years; more of the same doesn’t feel particularly revolutionary.

Second, she is appearing in a Swimsuits for All ad, not a magazine feature. SI didn’t say, “Hey, let’s feature a (marginally) more diverse group of women;” they just accepted an ad from a company that was paying them to do so. They’re getting all this positive attention for something that took no effort on their part, and in fact is making them money.

Third, and most important: I don’t feel that it’s progress for fat women to be objectified too. SI‘s swimsuit issue is pretty much the epitome of the male gaze: its entire purpose is putting women in skimpy swimwear for men’s enjoyment. Even if SI had included an actual fat woman in an actual feature–even if, say, they had put Tess Munster/Holliday on the cover–I’d still be less than thrilled.

I just can’t see more objectification of women as a thing to celebrate. I’d rather see SI‘s swimsuit issue stop existing, or at least become culturally irrelevant–or be complemented by an equivalent, equally popular issue full of guys in skimpy swimwear. But a slight expansion in the standards of the sexist status quo just doesn’t do it for me.

Fatshion February, day 4: Black, red, and white

Fatshion February, day 2: Purple roses

If I don’t look very happy in these pictures, it’s because I had just slogged through semi-shoveled sidewalks and snowbanks on the last leg of my commute–after having to take an alternate, and longer, route home, because the T (Boston’s subway system) was having an epic meltdown.

Our infrastructure is just not dealing with the snow, and it’s a huge problem. To be fair, this has been Boston’s snowiest week on record; but then again, the T falls apart when it’s hot out too, and sometimes for no weather-related reason at all. It’s really unnerving, to say the least, when the transit system you depend on keeps falling apart.

I was so not in the mood to pose for pictures, but I wanted to document this lovely dress that I picked up at my recent clothing swap. It’s a 14/16, and it’s a bit snugger than I would prefer, but you can’t really tell from the pictures.

Fatshion February, day 1: Glitter space cat

It’s Fatshion February, woo! Here’s what I wore yesterday to watch the Puppy Bowl with friends (including Maggie of Curvy Broke Fashion, whose outfit post you can see here). Maggie and I are always on the same fashion wavelength without even trying. 🙂

I wanted to wear something puppy-themed for the occasion, but I realized I didn’t have anything, so I went with the next closest thing: cat accessories. The clutch/makeup bag is too small to really be useful, but I brought it with me for pictures because it was so freaking cute and because it matched the metallic light pink of my headband. I was also wearing my favorite glitter eyeliner, Urban Decay’s Heavy Metal, but it’s hard to see it in the pictures. I’m wearing it here in Spandex, on top of silver eyeshadow, and I also have it in Midnight Cowboy and ACDC. I don’t wear it that often, but I really should because it’s fabulous.
