Sunday links, 3/4/13
Finally, here are this week’s links. And a bunch of baby goats playing Hop on Pop with a dog!
Fa(t)shion
-Fabulous hat porn!

–New African fashion: a refreshing look at the vast array of gorgeous fashion coming out of Africa.
-I love these photos from a runway show for a body-positive bra line.
-The “I’m fat, let’s party” shirt I’ve been eyeing forever is back in stock! I so need to get my hands on one.
-Through Offbeat Bride, I found out about the Wardrobe Shop, which has the most amazing vintage-style dresses ever–and many of them come in plus sizes.
Climate Justice and Sustainability
-A really important and interesting piece on the future of the movement: Three tactics for a stronger climate movement. I especially like this idea: “Imagine if, when blockading a pipeline construction site, radicals invited the whole community to a festival on the site? Instead of a few people locking down, what if the community barricaded the area and held a dance party or a carnival, reclaiming it as a community space for direct democracy, food growing, and celebration?”
-For my fellow Massachusettians: why the MA Democratic Senate primary is, unexpectedly, one of the hottest fronts in the planet’s biggest battle.
–Fourth-graders crowdfund their own solar-powered classroom. And they’re not the only ones using crowdfunding for clean energy.
–What steam ships and the landline can tell us about the decline of the private car.
–Victory at hand for the climate movement? I sure hope so.
Everything Else
–What’s wrong with the term “person of color”…or at least how it’s used.
-If you can, donate to help the amazing queer activist and all-around badass Kate Bornstein stay alive.
–“It isn’t rocket science”: Tin House and Granta editors on how to run a publication that isn’t sexist.
–All work and no pay: the great speedup. This is the kind of shit that just makes me angry and I don’t know what to do about it…
–This piece is beautiful. It’s about surviving the breakup of a long-term relationship, but applies to so many other situations as well.
–The revolution will not be polite: the issue of nice vs. good.
-The Hello Etsy conference that happened this weekend sounds amazing. I wish I had found out about it earlier so I could have tried to make it!
Links, life, and music

Sorry about the lack of a Friday Links post this week! I’ve got lots of great links saved up, but I haven’t had the chance to compile them into a post.
The last few days have been a veritable whirlwind of (mostly impromptu) adventures, which I’ll tell you more about soon. I’ve got all sorts of exciting stuff in the works, and I’m exhausted.
In the meantime, enjoy this medley of 18 songs from around the world:

-All of the outfits at this Roaring ’20s party are amazing!
-I love this bride’s lilac gown, the groom’s purple velvet jacket, and the bridesmaids’ suits! So unique and fabulous.
-I really like the idea of a sweatshirt with a 10-year warrantee, although I wish it came in more sizes and nicer colors.
-Designer Karen Walker selected 12 models aged 65 to 92 for her latest 2013 eyewear collection, shot in collaboration with Ari Seth Cohen (of the blog Advanced Style).
–No more apologies: my journey to flabulous fatshionista. Love it!
Fat Acceptance
–Don’t tell me your hate isn’t killing us.
-My new role model: the fat dancing Speedo man.

It’s finally getting warm here. So, naturally, I’ve got florals on the brain.
Floral eye candy
I love florals, and have for pretty much my entire life. (Yup, I lived in floral leggings from third through sixth grade…and now they’re in again! Funny how fashion works like that…)
So when I came across this picture while flipping through a magazine, I was completely, utterly enamored.

Pink peony print = amazing. Just amazing.
A lot of celebrity fashion doesn’t do it for me, but this knocked my socks off.
This dress is why I love fashion.
Guest post at Trip Logic: sustainable travel
Over at Trip Logic, I wrote a post about the need for sustainable travel.
On a related note, I hate how expensive trains are. Recently, I was planning a weekend trip to see family, and taking Amtrak would have been the easiest way to get there. But because the tickets were prohibitively expensive, I had to choose a less convenient combination of bus and car.
It’s downright ridiculous how much more expensive trains are than buses–which are slower, less comfortable, and less environmentally friendly.
To be honest, I don’t know much about transportation policy or how to make trains less expensive. But I do know it needs to happen. I know it’s ludicrous that it should cost over $150 to get from one major East Coast city to another by train.
Bostonian fatshionistas, mark your calendars!

Three outfits featuring items I got at last year’s Big Thrifty: purple capris, silver velvet slipdress, black velvet blazer, and pink laser-cut skirt.
The Big Thrifty: A Day of Bargain Shopping for Fatshionistas is coming up on May 4th.
From the event’s description:
The Big Thrifty is a one-day annual bargain-hunting fat clothing event happening 12pm-5pm Saturday, May 4th, 2013 at Unity Somerville, 6 William St. (edging College Ave.), Davis Square, Somerville, MA, just three blocks from the Red Line T station.
Pay $5 at the door and head toward fat thrifting fun! There will be tables and racks and bins of clothing sizes XL and up sorted by size. Items will be priced cheaply and easily (example: all tops, $3ea.; all items priced $.50-$10.00).
Who will this benefit? Besides all the shoppers reaping the rewards of fashion scores at thrift-tacular prices, we’ll be selecting a charity. After the May 2012 Big Thrifty, we sent $4,000+ to NOLOSE (www.nolose.org).
I went last year, and it was amazing! Not only was there a ton of cheap, awesome clothing sorted by size, but there was such a sense of community. It was wonderful being surrounded by friendly, fabulous fatties.
If you’re in the Boston area, I highly recommend checking it out! Also, I just donated four bags of clothing, so you’ll have a good chance of finding something that used to be mine. 🙂
Friday links, 3/8/13
Happy Friday! If you can, help restore Re/Dress. Rachel Kacenjar of Cupcake & Cuddlebunny and Sweettooth Couture has bought the store, and she has some awesome plans for it–including re-opening a physical location in 2014.
Environmental Justice/Sustainability
-This is really important and powerful: With climate change, a bad deal gets even worse for the global South.
–How climate change affects people of color.
–The children: why a generation is putting itself on the line for the climate. I have so much respect and admiration for these students.
–Australia officially blames climate change for “angry summer.”
–Supercapacitors may have the potential to change the world.
–Back to the land again: folk schools teach skills for modern-day survival.
-Some good news: the Sierra Club Beyond Coal campaign is halfway to its goal of retiring a third of the US’ coal-fired power, and
solar power is quickly becoming economically sustainable.
–Dancing the world into being: a conversation with Idle No More’s Leanne Simpson.
–Generational impacts of climate change: what will it mean for you?
-Have I mentioned I love Boston? I have a new reason to be proud of my city: the Higher Ground Farm, which will open this spring on the roof of the Boston Design Center and will be the world’s second-largest rooftop farm.
What good is a movement without songs?
