Friday Links, 11/9/12

Today’s edition of Friday Links has been brought to you by Thessaly, one of the two cutest cats ever. (Her sister, Toto, is also adorable, but harder to corral for pictures.)

Fa(t)shion
-My life could use a bit more Melbourne Cup fashion. Actually, a lot more. That tutu and flower crown! Those fascinators! *swoon*
Dots now offers online shopping! Which is exciting because I like their clothes, but the last time I went to their store, I couldn’t try on any of it, as the cashiers were busy ringing up a long line of customers and there was no one to unlock the dressing rooms.
-Wardrobe Oxygen has an interview with Desiree, a fabulous older fashionista.  My favorite quote: “Fashion is what talented designers are paid to churn out up to four times a year, in many cases at great personal and emotional expense. Style is the opposite. It’s like slipping into a dream. There’s excitement, fear, hesitation and you learn to fall into yourself.”
-A kitty fascinated by sparkly shoes. Awwwwww.
Sophisticate noir November theme: hosiery (and some awesome shoes too).
Too poor for Old Navy.
7 reasons you should compliment total strangers. I really like doing this, as it brightens people’s day–just like it brightens mine when they compliment my fashion choices.
-A Tumblr of Muslims wearing things.
Fatshionistas in the New York Times!
-A new plus size clothing buying/selling marketplace, Abbey Post, will be launching in December.
Six great +40 fashion blogs.
-DIY: make rhinestone jewelry colorful with acrylic paint.

Friday Links, 10/26/12

Happy Friday, and happy almost-Halloween! Do you have anything fun planned for the weekend or next Wednesday?

A chocolate haunted house!

I’m going to start organizing Friday links by categories, in order to make them easier to browse.

Fa(t)shion
-Plus size fashion blogger Elann Zelie launches a clothing line, Zelie for She.
-Lesley has a great round-up of printed plus size leggings.
-This list is a good reminder of why access to clothing matters.
Out and about: Haute Curves made history during L.A. fashion week.
-Shawna of Chubby Cartwheels has two posts about fat-positive shopping in Portland, OR. I’m so jealous–I’ll definitely check out those stores if I ever make it to Portland.
Ose Vintage: fall/winter collection. I especially like the pink leopard-print and black velvet dresses.
-Pictures from Adele’s Vogue shoot.
-Suggestions for finding plus-size goth clothing.
What is age-appropriate dressing, anyway?

There’s nothing like hot chocolate on a chilly fall day.

Fat activism
Fat stories: an exhibition.
-Great advice on responding to fat-hate from Texts from Dog.
-Tori has a great hypothetical response to people who want her to join a weight-loss-oriented link exchange.
-A must-read: 21 things to stop saying unless you hate fat people. The comments are a mixed bag, but I really like this one, which has the best analogy I’ve read yet about the pathologizing of fatness.
-A brave young woman put up a self-portrait in her underwear as a statement about self-acceptance.
My fat body is me: so much yes to all of this.
-A response to fat-shaming within progressive communities.
-Anna Guest-Jelley of Curvy Yoga on being a fat yoga teacher.

OOTD: Pink and gray

A few years ago, my friend Emily (of CoupCoup Designs and Yarn Pornography) introduced me to the idea of wearing colored leggings with black socks as pseudo-tights. It’s perfect for me, because I love how tights look but I hate how they feel, and leggings are much better.

Luckily, I can fit into an XL in American Apparel leggings, which are fairly durable. [Insert obligatory rant about how arbitrary women’s sizing is–how weird it is that I’m wearing a 3X top, an XXL skirt, and XL leggings all in the same outfit.] They’re a little long, so they bunch up around the ankles, but that doesn’t bother me too much.

Top: Deb, tutu: Target, leggings: American Apparel, shoes: Naot via David’s Famous Name Shoes, earrings: not sure, bracelets: Torrid and Deb, necklace: a pendant from Michael’s on a chain I already owned, fascinator: Claire’s (another $1 find!) Continue reading

Apple-picking and OOTD

Yesterday, a few of my friends and I went apple-picking. It’s a bit of a tradition–this is the third year we’ve done it at the same farm. They also have a petting zoo, a farm store, a pumpkin patch, a food stand, and a bouncy castle and hayride for kids. It’s a really fun place to spend the afternoon, be silly with friends, and end up with lots of apples.

Have I mentioned how much I love New England?

Heh.

Here’s what I wore:

Shirt: Old Navy, pants: CVS, necklace: Kelsea Echo, heart ring: the Toy Chest, sunglasses and rose ring: Claire’s, earrings: Faces, glitter bow: Crown and Glory, rainbow bangle: So Good
