Fatshion February, day 14: Valentine’s edition–and exciting news!

I can’t hold it in any longer, so here it is: Steve and I are engaged! He proposed on Valentine’s Day in Central Park, at the top of a CASTLE.

Yes, there is a castle in Central Park. We had been to it two years ago–you can see the picture here–and decided to go up it again while wandering around. And then, after we had someone take the following picture of us, and after Steve took a few outfit pictures of me, he asked me to marry him! Eeeeeeeeee!

After descending from the castle, we continued to walk around Central Park, where we saw an incredibly talented singing group and opera singer performing, and then came across an ice festival. It was all so serendipitous and romantic.

Fatshion February, day 12: red hearts

I wore Valentine’s themed outfits in the days leading up to V-Day, although unfortunately I didn’t get a picture of my outfit on Friday (day 13), because that’s when Steve and I left for a weekend in New York. I went straight from work to the train station, and by the time we got to our hotel in NYC, it was nearly 1 a.m. and I was too exhausted to take pictures. I’ll try to re-wear that outfit soon so I can get pictures of it, though.

This headband came in my February Glitterati box, and I love it. It’s not my usual style, but I really like how it looks on me–and it reminds of Rosie the Riveter’s red bandana. You can see Leah wearing the same headband here, with an adorable matching dress! Continue reading

Fatshion February, day 10, part 2: glitter hearts!

Today’s second outfit was inspired by Valentine’s Day coming up. I’m still not sure what I’m going to wear for V-Day, but this heart headband is a definite contender.

Fatshion February, day 10, part 1

I’m finally starting to feel better, but still stuck at home due to the snow, so I had some fun playing dress-up with my new Crown & Glory pieces. Next time I wear this marabou crown, I’ll have to find a darker background–it doesn’t show up that well against the white wall.

Fatshion February, day 4: Black, red, and white

Dress + leggings + cardigan/shrug/blazer = pretty much my winter uniform. plus size outfit red and black dress with polka dot leggings Dress: Perceptions via either a clothing swap or the Big Thrifty, leggings: Re/Dress, shoes: L.L. Bean, shrug: SimplyBe, necklace: gift shop at Disney World, earrings: really old I don’t love this dress, but it’s a good basic work dress, so I end up wearing it a lot. It’s comfortable and versatile, just not exciting, and sometimes that’s ok. plus size outfit white fuzzy bolero, polka dot dress and leggings Continue reading

Fatshion February, day 2: Purple roses

If I don’t look very happy in these pictures, it’s because I had just slogged through semi-shoveled sidewalks and snowbanks on the last leg of my commute–after having to take an alternate, and longer, route home, because the T (Boston’s subway system) was having an epic meltdown.

Our infrastructure is just not dealing with the snow, and it’s a huge problem. To be fair, this has been Boston’s snowiest week on record; but then again, the T falls apart when it’s hot out too, and sometimes for no weather-related reason at all. It’s really unnerving, to say the least, when the transit system you depend on keeps falling apart.

I was so not in the mood to pose for pictures, but I wanted to document this lovely dress that I picked up at my recent clothing swap. It’s a 14/16, and it’s a bit snugger than I would prefer, but you can’t really tell from the pictures.

Fatshion February, day 1: Glitter space cat

It’s Fatshion February, woo! Here’s what I wore yesterday to watch the Puppy Bowl with friends (including Maggie of Curvy Broke Fashion, whose outfit post you can see here). Maggie and I are always on the same fashion wavelength without even trying. 🙂

I wanted to wear something puppy-themed for the occasion, but I realized I didn’t have anything, so I went with the next closest thing: cat accessories. The clutch/makeup bag is too small to really be useful, but I brought it with me for pictures because it was so freaking cute and because it matched the metallic light pink of my headband. I was also wearing my favorite glitter eyeliner, Urban Decay’s Heavy Metal, but it’s hard to see it in the pictures. I’m wearing it here in Spandex, on top of silver eyeshadow, and I also have it in Midnight Cowboy and ACDC. I don’t wear it that often, but I really should because it’s fabulous.

I’m Miss World (Alternative Curves: Riot Grrl)

I know Courtney Love never considered herself, or her band, a part of the Riot Grrl movement. But she’s the first person I think of when I think of Riot Grrl. And she, along with Gwen Stefani, was one of my earliest style icons. So I decided to emulate her early-’90s look for this month’s Alternative Curves challenge.

Riot Grrl was a bit before my time, but I got into Hole in middle school alongside my Nirvana obsession. Their music was so raw, so angry, so feminist–so everything I needed. And I fell hard for Love’s kinderwhore look: messy hair, smeared red lipstick, baby barrettes, babydoll dresses, ripped tights, Mary Janes.

OOTD: Red and black retro-glam

This is what I wore to my friends Nathan and Jess’ vow renewal two weeks ago. They got married last year in a small ceremony with only family and their best friends, spent a year traveling the world (how awesome is that?), and then had a vow renewal with a reception so we could all celebrate with them.

Dress: ModCloth, cardigan: Kohl’s, clutch: Boohoo, fascinator: SimplyBe, jewelry: So Good, snow boots: from my mom (I wore them on the way to the venue, and then changed into dance shoes once I got there)

This is my go-to wedding guest dress; I wore it last year for my friends Liz and Ian’s wedding as well. I never got around to posting pictures then, but you can see one picture from that day in my 2014 year in review post. I’ll try to post the rest eventually, along with all the other outfits I never got around to posting!

plus size outfit retro black and red dress

The dress is pretty awesome all around: soft, comfortable, stretchy, twirly, and has pockets. It’s even machine-washable! I was wary of putting it in the wash, because I’ve had similar dresses fade in the wash (this one faded so much it’s more gray than black, sigh). I tried hand-washing it once, which turned out a huge hassle, as it has a ridiculous amount of fabric. So the second time I wore it, I crossed my fingers and I put it in a delicates bag, and it turned out fine. Continue reading
