We’re here. We’re fat. We have awesome petticoats!
2012 was a pretty big year for Tutus and Tiny Hats, since it’s the year I started it.
I started in mid-June, which makes the blog just about half a year old. And it’s been a pretty awesome half a year. I’ve made connections around the blog-o-sphere, “met” some really cool people, and taken part in a lot of interesting conversations.
Before I started blogging, I was mostly a lurker, so it’s been exciting to get into the thick of it all. To feel like a real part of the fat-o-sphere, not just someone watching from the outside.
A big thank-you to all my readers, followers, and commenters for being awesome. 🙂
Without any further ado, here are my top ten posts of the year:
10. Flashback: Girlfriends L.A. GFLA was one of the first companies that sold awesome plus size clothing, and it will always have a special place in my heart.
9. Fatshion: not inclusive enough. As much as I enjoy living, breathing, and blogging about fatshion, I think it’s important to keep in mind that there are still people who are left out–and it shouldn’t be that way. We need to keep fighting for greater inclusivity.
8. On life and dreams: a ramble. It’s really interesting to look back on where I was just a few months ago. In some ways, I’m still in the same place, and in other ways…I’m really not. Lately, I’ve been feeling like I need a break from even thinking about (non-blogging forms of) writing. And the fire that burns strongest inside me right now? Travel. Adventure. Seeing the world. I’m finally sick of Boston, after over five years–or nine, if you count college–here. What am I going to do about that? I’m not sure yet.
7. My #1 fa(t)shion rule: Don’t assume. This is a lesson I’ve learned mainly from the internet, from reading so many different people’s perspectives. And it applies to everything, not just fa(t)shion.
6. My body is not heartbreaking: more fun with microaggressions. This pretty much sums up my views on fat acceptance. Tori and April made important points in the comments, so make sure to read theirs–although feel free to skip some of the other, ignorant ones.
5. On apples and abdominal adiposity. I enjoy any excuse to alliterate. And to talk about the different shapes that bodies come in, and what that means.
4. The complex ethics of fa(t)shion blogging. This stuff is endlessly complex, and important to talk about.
3. Fashion policing: a playground of oppression. I spent a lot of time working on this post–the original draft was a mess–and I’m really happy with how it came out. Sometimes I wish I could make the entire internet read it.
2. Online fat communities: where are we going? I’ve been reading fat acceptance blogs since the early days of Shapely Prose, and I’ve seen a lot of changes in the online fat community. Some are good, some…not so much.
1. Are fatshionistas pioneering a deep economy of fashion? Although I don’t write about it much, I have some strong views on our current economic system, and its environmental and human consequences. I believe we absolutely need to work toward building a better system. And I like to think and hope that fatshionistas are on the forefront of that work, in our own small way.
